The Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) is celebrated on November 1 and 2 in Mexico and around the world as a time to gather and remember friends and family who have died. It is celebrated by bringing photos, gifts, favorite food and beverages to the gravesites of loved ones as a way of encouraging their souls to visit.
The roots of this holiday can be traced back to the natives of Central America encountered by the Spanish whom they found practicing a ritual that seemed to mock death and take away its power. No time to be morose or morbid, today the tone is light-hearted and celebratory, in many places becoming a picnic where families tell jokes and funny stories about the deceased or dress up like their lost loved ones.
Elaborate altars are built and decorated with hundreds of marigolds, candles, sugar skulls and “offrendas”, offerings of food and drink are left on the graves for the souls to consume and then are shared by the celebrators afterwards.
In honor of this tradition, we offer you a delicious recipe for a drink to share with your friends on this day of celebration and remembrance. We call it “ChaiChata” because it’s made with “RumChata”, a delicous rum flavored like the ubiquitous Mexican drink, horchata.
You can drink it hot or cold but we made ours hot, imagining sitting out on an early November evening, visiting the graveside of a dear friend or loved one.
1 tsp of Tipu’s Chai Now – The Simple Life
6 ounces boiling water
2 ounces RumChata
Add boiling water to Tipu’s Chai Now – The Simple Life and top off with RumChata. You can garnish with whipped cream and a sprinkling of cinnamon. Serve hot or pour over ice. Sweeten to taste.
