Chai Concentrate

We have had some ecologically-minded customers ask some questions about our use of plastic bottles for our chai concentrate.  We share your concerns about plastic safety and waste.  So we would like to let you know why we use them and what they are made of.

At Tipu’s Chai, we package our concentrates in plastic bottles.  But these aren’t just any plastic bottles.  The website www.earthodyssey.com provides this information on the #5PP bottles:

Properties: toughness, strength, resistance to heat, grease, oil, and chemicals, barrier to moisture. Density: 0.90-0.92 g/cc
Statistic: In 1999 PP accounted for 2% of plastic bottle resin sales.
Description: Polypropylene has the lowest density of the resins used in packaging. It is strong and is resistant to chemicals. Since it has a high melting-point it can be utilized in applications requiring that a container be filled with a hot liquid.

At Tipu’s Chai, we use these bottles for a couple of reasons.  They are designed to be filled with hot liquids and don’t melt or break down when we bottle our chai at upwards of 195 degrees.  We bottle at this high temperature to ensure the product is safe to be kept on the shelf unrefrigerated until you open it at home.

#5 PP bottles are also preferred because they have not been found to release BPA or phthalates, which are the subject of great debate due to suspected health risks associated with the leaching of BPA from other plastics, especially in baby bottles.  For a very thorough article on the subject of the safety of plastic containers, go here .

In most places, #5 bottles are recyclable and they are remade into products such as signal lights, battery cables, brooms, brushes, auto battery cases, ice scrapers, landscape borders, bicycle racks, rakes, bins, pallets, and trays.  Glass, on the other hand, is not recycled in all communities, especially in rural communities like ours!  We encourage all of our concentrate customers to recycle their plastic bottles.

So for all these reasons, we think we have chosen the best way to package the freshest chai possible for you.  But stay in touch!  Tipu’s Chai is about to launch an innovative new approach to chai that will ultimately make the use of so many plastic bottles and the shipping of water around the country obsolete!  To be announced in our next blog!  Stay tuned…
