With summer fast on its way, sun-starved Missoulians are hitting the streets with the most satisfying summer tonic in hand. And no, it’s not a dark, chocolaty Pigs Ass Porter or an amber scotch Cold Smoke; rather, it’s a locally made spicy beverage that has captured the attention of restaurants and coffee houses nationwide—Tipu’s Chai Tea.

CoffeeFest Minneapolis

Trade show booth

We just finished Coffee Fest Minneapolis, our first Midwestern trade show.  The people out there are so nice!  Don’t get me wrong – they’re nice in Portland, too.  But in Minneapolis, they’re nice in a hearty, how-ya-doin’ kind of way that you don’t get here on the Coast.  And downtown Minneapolis must be one of the cleanest cities on earth.  Not to mention, full of tasty restaurant fare….

Our First Blog Post

Thanks for visiting our site and being one of the first to join us on our grand chai adventure.  This week finds us getting ready for the SCAA (Specialty Coffee Association of America) show in Anaheim, California.  We’ll be showing off our new look and our new variety of instant Tipu’s Chai.  One of the questions we’ll be asked again and again is where we got our name.  Sultan Fateh Ali Tipu, also known as the Tiger of Mysore, was a ruler, scholar, soldier, and poet who remains something of a hero to the Indian people.  Tipu Sultan was a very enlightened ruler. Considered one of the original freedom fighters, he brought progressive thinking, modernization, economic development, and social reforms to his people.  He also had an affinity for tigers.  So when Tipu’s Chai founder Bipin patel opened his vegetarian Indian restaurant in Missoula, Montana, he named it Tipu’s Tiger.  While at the restaurant, Bipin began serving his authentic Indian chai, made from his grandmother’s recipe.  The restaurant closed but the chai lives on.  We dropped the tiger but kept the sultan.  We hope you enjoy your regally inspired cup of goodness.
